Chills and Thrills

How did it get to be the end of October? 

I'm not sure, but

 it's time once again, to 

have a mini quilt ready to share.

After posting and sharing 

some of my Halloween quilts

a couple of weeks ago,

I decided why not make another one!

I had found a pile of Halloween fabrics

 and started pulling out an

assortment of purples, oranges and blacks.

Why not work with the quilter's trilogy. 

How about starting with orange and black nine patches and make a

checkerboard.

Pinwheels might be

nice to add next. 

 Why not make them purple and black.

I used fabrics mostly from my stash, but

I have to admit, that I needed a few other pieces.

A few more bright purples and

that black and white dot. 

 Isn't that right, Pat B!

I was spotted at my LQS!!

To finish the trilogy

how about making a few flying geese?

I thought about adding another pieced border, but

a reality check said, no more.

Besides, what was left to add! 

You'll smile at the fabric for the last border.

Holey, moley, that's an oldie!

I guess that's why you have a stash.

You never know when you might need

a special piece buried deep down in the fabric bins.

I found a hidden backing too and 

look at the date.  

Too funny!!

Well, at this point, this Halloween

treat will have to wait for a finish.

Our fearless leader, Wendy, The Constant Quilter,

continues to coordinate all of us who continue to

make minis each month.

(Even though, mine never really qualify 

as a true mini)

October Mini Check-In Plus Playing with Crayons

This month I took 

a little sewing liberty with

my monthly mini.

I had been wanting to do something

that showcased October.

You know,

pumpkins, fall colors,

and

sweater weather...

I had purchased a pattern 

last year when I was in Houston 

for festival from Primitive Gatherings.

It fit all the required criteria.

But I didn't want to do ghost pumpkins,

so I dug out the orange wools instead

and started stitching.

Black wool

11" x 30"

Pumpkins, wool, fun stitching,

the feeling of fall.

It all came together.

The bittersweet vine doesn't grow

 here, so it's nice

to include it on this runner

with clusters of little colonial knots.

Fall has arrived here 

and this little runner 

reminds us of the crisp air,

flannel sheets,

crunching leaves,

the need to slow down,

and enjoying everything pumpkin.

Several of you asked about the crayon tinting

that I did in my embroidery.

I learned how to do it from Meg Hawkey

of Crabapple Hill Studios and have 

found her techniques to be very successful.

Flow With the Seasons

 I have a very dear quilting friend

whose stitching philosophy

is to work on seasonal projects

during the same season.

That way she's working with the

colors and styles that represent

that particular time of the year.

I understand her thoughts,

 It surrounds you with 

seasonal expressions. 

Although, I have to admit,

 I'm usually a season or more behind

or on a few occasions, I'm actually ahead.

 Depending on how you look at it!

But this time

I was right on.

I finished working on 

my "Autumn" pillow

designed by Crabapple Hill.

If you remember I started this a 

few weeks ago while

 sitting and waiting for Running Man

to finish running 50 miles.

I had gotten to this point 

by the time he crossed the finish line.

For the last couple of weeks

I've been enjoying the rest of the stitching

 

as the fall colors have begun to appear

in my neck of the woods.

The design incorporated a few bits of wool

for the leaves and rosehips.

It gave the pillow solid spots of color

on the outer edges.

The directions also suggested a 

small wool scalloped border

which I tacked down with french knots. 

 I used a small hand dyed brown piece that

had been lingering in my wool bin.

I liked how it framed the embroidery.

I had three pieces of fabric that I wanted to use.

One for the border,

the marble for the cording

and the dots for the backing,

but sometimes you just have to improvise.

It was a sweet project to work on

and now it's ready to enjoy

during the "current" Autumn season.
