The Beauty of Trees

" I never saw a discontented tree.
They grip the ground as though they liked it,
and though fast rooted they travel about as far as we do.
They go wandering forth in all directions with every wind,
going and coming like ourselves,
traveling with us around the sun two million miles a day,
and through space heaven knows how fast and far!"
~John Muir

I love the beauty of trees.
Their shape and texture.
Their majestic presence.

We have been trying since
we moved here 5 years ago to extend the life
of this wonderful old cottonwood.

But ...
The it hasn't helped.
So today we arranged to have it taken down.
I'll have to watch,
but with a sense of sadness.

"The Old Man of the Tree"

Weird as it may sound,
I can't look into those eyes.

But come spring we'll plant the next generation of tree
and the cycle will start again.

 Until Next Time-

  1. We had a cottonwood tree on our farm growing up. I can't even tell you how old it was, my parents lived there 30+ years, but it finally had to be cut down because it was rotted inside. I cursed that tree every year the cotton blowed around because I was allergic, but I appreciate that old tree anyway.

  6. Kate, I didn't save any of the bark, instead I saved a whole big slab! It makes the perfect sitting spot. I put it under the pines near the water. Don't tell Daddy.
