Oh, Baby, Baby, It's a Wild Week

 On Thursday I thought
my coincidence with the #31
was going to continue.
(see last week's post, here)

We all had a feeling that my Denver daughter
was going into labor and would be heading
to the hospital before August 31st ended.

But it turned out we had to
wait until until Saturday, September 2 for

Eloise Frances to make her appearance.

She'll be joining her two brothers and
life will never be the same at their home!

I had to wait until Monday
to hold her.
It was a good Nana fix!
****

I have started a new school year commitment.
Each weekday morning
 I'm heading off early
to get my kindergarten granddaughter to school

Everdeen and Weston

and then bringing this serious looking 4 month old
back to my house for the day.

 Cat Stevens sang
"Oh, baby, baby it's a wild world."
I'll just change the words to
"Oh, Baby, Baby it's a wild week".

Quilting time is squeezed in during naps,
which are very short,
or at the end of the day.
We'll see how that goes!
****

But fear not,
I did get a chance to work on a baby quilt
for Weston.
I had purchased a Moda kit
designed by Gingiber.
I adored the animals and the prints
and thought it would make the
perfect little boy's quilt.

One of the things about purchasing a quilt kit
put together by the fabric company is that
the fabric amounts included are
VERY generous, which, of course,
you are paying for.

For example: six different fat quarters that only
required four 2 3/4"  squares cut out of each.
or eight different fat quarters that only
required four  2 3/4" x 5.5" rectangles.

I understand they aren't going to take the time
to subcut smaller increments, but
even a fat 1/8th would have been better.

The problem that bothered me the most, though,
was that were was a error in the pattern,
right at step #1.
You would have thought that someone
would have caught it along the way.
Well, I guess all that extra fabric came in handy.

The quilt eventually came together great

and the animals

are pretty cute.

And what about all that
extra fabric?  It  made the perfect
pieced backing.

The panel included a miniature
version of each animal with a sweet comment.
It was fun to include them as well.

Hopefully, it won't be too long before
I can get it quilted.
We'll just have to see how "the wild week" goes.

 And as Bob Dylan says,
" The Times They Are A-Changin' "
I guess that's what keeps you young!

Until Next Time-
Kyle

  1. Congratulations! Grandchildren are the best. I agree that kits can have way tooooooo much fabric, but you made good use of it.

  5. Congratulations Kyle! A new grandbaby is about the most special thing we can hope for at this time of life. And they do tend to keep us young and alert! Your baby quilt is so sweet, just like that little one who will be wrapped up in it soon!

  6. Congratulations to Mom and Dad and to the very happy grandparents. The baby quilt is adorable. I have noticed the oversize pieces in the fabric kits. I don't often purchase kits. I appreciate the extra fabric to some extent....in case of error. But kits can be so expensive because of the extra. I try to watch for a sale rather than full price.
I know you have to be concerned for your Florida daughter and husband. It isn't looking good for South Florida right now. I hope the storm eye is out over the ocean and not the state of Florida.

I hope you can squeeze in some time to stitch today :0)

  10. Oh my! Congratulations! For a minute I thought your 31 streak was still intact as I added up 09/02/2017, but as I recalculated I realized my mistake. So much for my math skills, I guess that is why I quilt - wink! What fun you will have with those little ones this winter. Yes, quilting will take a back seat at times, but those of us who are lucky enough to be Nana's can relate to the joy! Oh yes, I love the little quilt top too!

  11. Looks like you are surrounded with bundles of joy to love! Congrats on the newest arrival.
You are going to be one busy grandma this school year.
I have bought a couple of kits on clearance sales, but I have yet to sew them, so I haven't experienced that abundance of fabric. That does seem quite excessive. But you got a darling quilt out of it, and made great use of the extra on the back.

  12. Congratulations!!! The baby quilt turned out great. A seasoned quilter can get over the variations in a quilt kit like you did. But, I feel sorry for the newby who doesn't know how to fix the problems. It was a nice bonus to get the extra fabric. . .

  13. Congrats to mum on her sweet new addition - what a lovely photo. Good luck on your new journey too. It's quite a commitment but having such gorgeous grandchildren must help. I'm preparing for minding grand kids by minding grand dogs - not exactly the same but still takes time from sewing! Love the baby quilt top - you do such beautiful piecing. I know what you mean about pattern errors ...happens often but keeps us on our stitching toes!

  14. Great news! Lovely quilt and even better to use up the fabric on the back, bit annoying about the pattern mistake though.

  15. Congratulations! Oh she is adorable! :) The baby quilt is as well! :) I did that with one of the grands for first grade ; before and after all that year. Now I just pitch in when needed ( the DIL just had some surgery and can't do a thing for awhile so I am the jack of all trades for a week or so...before school, after school, with her during...but while she snoozes I hand quilt a bit :)
